John R. Park Debate Society Hosts English Speaking Union’s British National Debate Team

The John R. Park Debate Society (the University of Utah Speech and Debate Team) is pleased to host the English Speaking Union’s British National Debate Team during their tour of the United States. Their tour will include a public debate held on the University of Utah Campus.

In cooperation with the National Communication Association’s Committee for International Discussion and Dialogue, the University of Utah’s John R. Park Debate Society and The Department of Communication will host The British National Debate Team, selected by the English Speaking Union. This year, Rebecca Howarth and Richard Hunter will represent the English Speaking Union. Rebecca is a graduate of the University of Birmingham. During her competitive debating career, Rebecca was a quarterfinalist at the European University Debating Championship. Richard was a two-time finalist at the Northern Ireland Schools debating competition, before pursuing a degree in modern history at the University of St. Andrews. The British Debaters will visit Utah from September 27-30, 2017, during their visit they will tour the University of Utah and Salt Lake City.

Their visit will also include a public debate with the University of Utah’s John R. Park Debate Society. In the spirit of the Committee for International Discussion and Debate’s commitment to public dialogue between students from the US and the UK, the two debate programs will debate an issue that emphasizes international relations and resonates with the University of Utah’s commitment to global citizenship. The resolution for the debate will be decided by the visiting British debaters prior to the event.

The event is free and open to the public.
